When it comes to lubricating oils, most people mistakenly believe that they belong to the chemical industry and are high-risk chemical products.
In fact, people’s understanding of lubricating oils may be overly one-sided. Although lubricating oils are petroleum-based products, they’re neither toxic, harmful, nor flammable—so there’s really no need to “turn pale at the mere mention of oil.” Moreover, lubricating oils play an important role in many aspects of our daily lives; let’s stop looking at them through tinted glasses! Today, we’ll take you through some key knowledge about storing lubricating oils.
Lubricating oils are specially formulated for different applications. If, due to improper storage, the oil deteriorates or becomes contaminated, it may fail to perform its intended function—and worse yet, it could even damage machinery, potentially leading to complete mechanical failure in severe cases.
The storage of lubricating oils should strictly adhere to three key principles: “store separately by type, maintain a clean environment, and prevent contamination.”
How should lubricating oil be stored?
● Do not store upright in outdoor environments to prevent water and debris from entering and causing contamination. ● For indoor storage, barrels can be stored upright with the opening facing upward for easy access. ● Tighten the sealing cap to keep the oil barrel airtight. ● Keep the surface of the barrel clean and ensure that labels are clearly visible. ● Maintain a clean floor to facilitate prompt detection in case of oil leaks. ● Properly record incoming stock and use items in the order they were received. ● Oil products that need to be frequently drawn should be stored on an oil drum rack and dispensed via a valve-controlled system. ● Store new oil separately from used oil; containers previously used for waste oil must not be used for new oil to avoid contamination.
Additionally, please note: ● Oil products must be stored separately, and no flammable materials should be placed nearby.
● Open flames and smoking are strictly prohibited; no sources of ignition are allowed in the oil storage area. ● At least two fire extinguishers must be provided. ● Oil-soaked rags or oil-contaminated materials generated after cleaning machinery must not be piled up, as they could easily catch fire. ● Flammable special oils or chemical solvents must be stored separately and clearly marked with “Flammable” signs.
Proper storage of lubricants not only prevents deterioration and maintains oil quality over the long term, but more importantly, it enhances safety! Safety matters in every detail—keep this warning firmly in mind!
